No Music on a Dead Planet mural

Saville returned to his own design with a warning. The pulses flatten into silence on the side of a building in Manchester.

In 2021, a version of the Unknown Pleasures graphic appeared as a climate campaign mural in Withington, Manchester. The work connected Music Declares Emergency’s No Music on a Dead Planet message with a reworking of Saville’s famous sleeve.

The alteration is small and the meaning is stark: remove the pulse and the image loses its life. Unlike an incidental resemblance or a fan bootleg, this adaptation brings the original sleeve designer back into the conversation.
