Vince Staples’ Summertime ’06

A different coast, a different kind of wave. Vince Staples’ debut album sleeve carries a clear visual echo of Unknown Pleasures.

Summertime ’06, released in 2015, trades the radio-pulse stack for an ocean-like field of white contours. The black ground and isolated image make the visual conversation with Joy Division immediate.

Contemporary coverage connected the sleeve to Staples’ interest in Joy Division. This is an album-to-album reinterpretation: a design language travelling between Manchester post-punk and Long Beach hip-hop.
